🍂 Fall Migration Birding Tours 🍂

Fall migration offers a different rhythm than spring, with fall colors fully in bloom, the forests are quieter but still overflowing with biodiversity! Habitats once again flood with migrant species making their perilous journeys southward from their breeding grounds on the Arctic tundra, or the boreal forests of northern Canada.

Fall tours are ideal for birders who enjoy careful observation, subtle field marks, and the satisfaction of finding high-quality migrants in beautiful autumn landscapes.

What will you see this Fall?

Marsh Sparrows and Wrens

Fall sparrows are a major focus on our fall tours, including secretive and highly sought-after species such as Nelson’s Sparrow, LeConte’s Sparrow, along with Sedge Wren and Marsh Wren in wet meadows and marshes.

Yellow Rails

One of the rarest, most elusive birds in North America can be seen in similar habitats during a select window in mid-fall, the Yellow Rail. On our tours we will target these elusive rails in select locations across the state.

Warblers

As migration intensifies, Indiana becomes a hotspot for warblers, with all 34 regularly expected fall species possible during peak weeks. We will target some of the harder to come by warbler species such as Orange-crowned Warbler, Connecticut Warbler, Black-throated Blue Warbler, and others.

Flycatchers

Flycatchers will also be abundant at this time, species such as Olive-sided Flycatcher, Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, and Alder Flycatcher will be targeted, as well as any vagrant flycatchers such as Vermillion and Ash-throated Flycatchers

Vireos

The treetops will also be alive with vireos, with targets being Blue-headed Vireo, Philadelphia Vireo, and more!

Cuckoos

The canopy and understory can be an excellent place for viewing migrating Cuckoos, with targets being Black and Yellow-billed Cuckoo

Thrushes

The forest floor will be patrolled by migratory thrush species such as Swainson's, Wood, Hermit, Veery, and Gray-cheeked Thrushes. Along with the rare occasional Varied Thrush

Shorebirds

Shorebirding is another Fall specialty in Indiana when the habitat is present! While all expected species are possible, tours place special emphasis on prairie and mudflat migrants such as Red-necked, and Red Phalarope, Baird’s Sandpiper and Buff-breasted Sandpiper, both highly anticipated birds for Midwest birders in the Fall.
